Interview with Steve Bliss, San Diego Probate Attorney

Taking Inventory of Assets: A Crucial First Step in Estate Planning

Good morning, Mr. Bliss. Thank you for joining us today to discuss estate planning. For our viewers who may be unfamiliar with the process, could you explain why taking inventory of assets is such a crucial first step?

Steve Bliss: Certainly. Taking inventory of assets is foundational to any sound estate plan. It’s essentially creating a detailed roadmap of everything you own. This includes obvious items like real estate and vehicles, but also encompasses investments, bank accounts, retirement funds, personal belongings of value, and even digital assets.

Consequently, having a clear understanding of what constitutes your estate allows you to make informed decisions about how these assets will be distributed according to your wishes. Moreover, it helps ensure that nothing is overlooked during the probate process.

I recall one instance where a client assumed they had a relatively straightforward estate. However, upon taking inventory, we discovered a significant investment portfolio they’d forgotten about. This discovery ultimately impacted how their assets were divided amongst their beneficiaries.

Notwithstanding these complexities, a comprehensive asset inventory provides peace of mind, knowing that your legacy will be handled according to your desires. A 2021 survey by Caring.com found that over 60% of adults do not have a will or estate plan in place. This highlights the importance of proactive planning.

The Challenges and Rewards of Estate Planning

Estate planning can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially when dealing with complex financial matters. Have you encountered any common challenges during this process?

Steve Bliss: Certainly. One challenge I often see is procrastination. People tend to put off estate planning until later in life, which can lead to rushed decisions and unintended consequences. Another hurdle is the emotional aspect. Discussing mortality and legacy can be difficult for some.

However, the rewards far outweigh the challenges. Seeing clients gain peace of mind knowing their loved ones will be taken care of after they’re gone is incredibly fulfilling. It’s a privilege to help people navigate this complex process and ensure their wishes are honored.
